Project Engineer – Industrial Refrigeration

Job Summary

Support the planning, design, execution, and closeout of industrial refrigeration projects, including ammonia (NH₃), CO₂, and other mechanical refrigeration systems. This role works closely with project managers, designers, field supervisors, contractors, and clients to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Job Title: Project Engineer – Industrial Refrigeration

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the engineering, planning, and execution of industrial refrigeration projects from design through commissioning
  • Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and customer requirements
  • Coordinate with design engineers, vendors, and subcontractors on equipment selection and system layouts
  • Prepare and review submittals, RFIs, change orders, and project documentation
  • Support project schedules, cost tracking, and material procurement
  • Perform field visits to support installation, resolve technical issues, and verify work aligns with design documents
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, IIAR, ASHRAE, and local code requirements
  • Assist with startup, testing, and commissioning of refrigeration systems
  • Participate in safety planning, hazard analysis, and project meetings
  • Support closeout activities including as-builts, O&M manuals, and customer training

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2–5+ years of experience in industrial refrigeration, mechanical systems, or construction engineering
  • Working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and specifications
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD or similar software is a plus
  • Willingness to travel to job sites as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with IIAR standards and industrial refrigeration codes
  • Field construction or commissioning experience
  • EIT or PE license (or progress toward licensure)
  • Experience working with contractors and industrial clients

  • Combination of office and industrial job site environments
  • May require climbing, lifting, and working around mechanical equipment
