Utah Olympic Oval

Kearns, Utah

Year Completed: 2020

Scope: Known as the fastest track in the world, LA Roser assisted with installation and continued service to this world-class ice rink.

Louis A. Roser Company prolonged the life of this world record holding facility by replacing aging shell-and-tube heat exchangers. To ensure the long-term integrity of the rink’s piping, the cooling brine was flushed and replaced with new monitoring and chemical treatment capabilities. To reduce electrical costs, a new compressor with variable frequency drive (VFD) was installed. A full flow balance of the Calcium Chloride Brine was performed.

Those entrusted with maintaining the “fastest ice on earth” rely on Louis A. Roser company to continue to service their equipment on a regular basis.

Maverick Center

Salt Lake City, Utah

Year Completed: 2019

Scope: The Engineering team at Louis A. Roser Company was asked to evaluate the equipment at Maverik center and offer suggestions to run more efficiently and prolong the life of the facility, both with and without the ice floor in place.

Our design was approved, and we worked with Lewis Young Robertson and Lux Energy to remove some of the aging equipment and install:

  • A new Ammonia Compressor with a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)
  • New Evaporative Condenser and Cooling Towers
  • Ammonia to Brine HX for the ice floor
  • New Brine Pumps and associated piping
  • Ammonia to Glycol HX for arena comfort cooling

The retrofit went well, it works wonderfully, and looks amazing.  Best of all, the soft ice issues are resolved, and they have reduced electrical costs.

Eccles Ice Center

Logan, Utah

Year Completed: 2018

Scope: The Louis A. Roser Company prolonged the life of this amazing facility by replacing the aged shell-and-tube heat exchanger. We also installed a new condenser and brine pump. The photos highlight the craftsmanship of our insulation team. We enjoy working with the Eccles Ice Center and are proud supports of their annual “Spice on Ice” event.

Geneva Nitrogen

Orem, Utah

Year Completed: 2011

Scope: Geneva Nitrogen is a unique facility in that it uses ammonia refrigeration systems to chill ammonia. They can store millions of pounds of ammonia at any given time. In 2011, LA Roser provided a new shell-and-tube heat exchanger to chill a small part of their process. This particular chiller presented a challenge, in that the heat exchanger had to replace an existing one, and still remain on the skid package originally installed.

Louis A. Roser Company designed a refrigeration system to lower the pressure of rail car tankers reduce the offloading time. An all-stainless steel ammonia refrigeration system was integrated into their existing processes and reduced rail car unloading time by 50%.

Linde Gas

Ohio; Price, Utah; Grand Junction, Colorado

Year Completed: 2012/On-going

Scope: Linde Gas has utilized LA Roser for many aspects of their system, including service work and controls upgrades. In 2012, the facility in Lima, Ohio upgraded the compressor controls from a manual, analog system to a more current, user-friendly digital control system. This greatly enhanced the compressors, allowing them to all communicate together, and ensure the system is not over-working.

ATK/Thiokol

Magna, Utah

Year Completed: 2008/2009/2011

Scope: ATK is a major name in space and science, providing NASA with the solid-state rocket fuel for the space program. They use an ammonia refrigeration system to chill a brine solution, which is used in another part of their processing. In 2008 and 2009, LA Roser began upgrades to their system, including replacing the original upright compressors with the advanced screw compressors used now. In 2009 and 2011, ATK worked with LA Roser to upgrade the old, very large, shell-and-tube heat exchangers to the new, efficient plate-and-frame chillers. These only take up a small fraction of the space for the same capacity.

Potato Products of Idaho

Rigby, Idaho

Year Completed: 2020

Scope: Potato Product of Idaho makes the best mashed potatoes we have ever tasted!  To support the growing demand of these delicious potatoes, the Louis A. Roser Company had the privilege to design/build a new ammonia refrigeration system to support two spiral freezers.

This is not the first time that PPI has turned to L.A. Roser for our expertise.  This is the third refrigeration system that we have installed at this same facility.  As their business grows, they continue to turn to the Louis A. Roser Company.   Just one more example of why we have been in business since 1907.

Schreiber Foods

Logan, Utah

Year Completed: 2020

Scope:In 2019 Schrieber added a new Yogurt processing line.  We modified their existing ammonia refrigeration system to give them additional glycol cooling capacity.  This included the installation of compressors, condensers, recirculator, and plate and frame ammonia to glycol HX skid.  We also assisting in the re-assembly of cooling tunnel that was moved from a different facility.

We started by taking a 3D scan of the existing mechanical areas.  We developed 3D models of the existing equipment and piping, and then we inserted all the new equipment, piping, and valves into the model.  This allowed us to review the layout with the great people at Schreiber’s to ensure they were happy with the piping and valve locations.  It also allowed us to fabricate much of the piping in our shop, thus reducing the overall cost of the project.

In 2020 we made additional modifications to support a new process line that was installed.  This included hundreds of feet of new glycol piping, converting a flooded ammonia to glycol HX to Direct Injection, and the removal of the surge drum to reduce ammonia inventory.  We also cleaned the HX plates and added new ones to increase the capacity of the unit.

Danone North America

Salt Lake City, Utah

Year Completed: 2018

Scope:

Danone purchased an old dairy processing facility in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Due to the change to an Ultra-Pasteurized process of the organic products, most of the facility was gutted, and new equipment was installed.

As part of this remodel Louis A. Roser Company had the privilege of working with Hill & Wilkinson out of Texas, and with Hixon Engineering out of Ohio.  We all worked together to create an incredible refrigeration system for Danone.  A short list of some of the major items we performed is listed below

  • Opened and performed UT inspection on tubes of Shell and Tube HXs
  • Installed new Glycol cooling system including
  • New piping throughout the facility
  • New Flooded plate and frame HX package from Evapco
  • New glycol storage tank and pumps
  • Installed new Ammonia compressors from Frick
  • Retrofit of existing recirculator
  • Added a liquid ammonia transfer pump
  • Installed new cooling water storage tank and pump system
  • Installed new fluid coolers
  • Installed a new ammonia diffusion tank
  • Installed new Evaporative Condenser
  • Assisted with controls changes and coordination
  • Provide PSM/RMP start-up assistance

We continue to support Danone on a regular basis, and we value their relationship.

This was a complex project that was performed within a very tight schedule.  Well done team!
